Yesterday, May 4, 2010, a national program for “democratic education” called IDEA was launched. Jackson, Mississippi is one of 22 sites participating in this national organization whose mission is that of “ensuring that all young people can participate meaningfully in their education and gain the tools to build a just, democratic, and sustainable world.” Simply said, IDEA is about advancing learning that matters. IDEA’s launch video, “Make Your Voice Heard,” shows what education can be like when we break out of the box—and how it’s happening today. The idea of IDEA is to “envision an educational system based on respect for human rights and values of freedom and responsibility, participation and collaboration, and equity and justice.”
If it’s true that progressive Christians are advocates of systemic justice, then educational justice is critical if there are to be new leading intellectuals addressing social reform in this country and throughout the world.
PCCS encourages you to visit IDEA’s Facebook page or website http://www.democraticeducation.org to connect right away with people around the country and in your area who share your frustrations and hopes and want to work toward change.

Here's what real people have to say about what 'Progressive Christianity' means to them:
Progressive Christianity encourages a spirituality that offers maturity, depth, and wisdom. It invites compassion.
One who does not quote Biblical chapters and verses, but who tries to live Christ’s message of compassion and justice.
Progressive Christians are liberated Christians who can think for themselves & not
have the church think for them.
Progressives refuse to participate in a theology of patriarchy that hold women in spiritual vassalage.
A profound faith focused more on justice than judgment; where all are allowed to participate as is their birthright as children of God.

You summed up our common ground beautifully: “Educational justice is critical if there are to be new leading intellectuals addressing social reform in this country and throughout the world.”
Look forward to collaborating on the journey!
